I.  Ask Waterband:

David, I understand that your parents are very musical.  How did they influence your musical career?

My parents are both very musical and were "instrumental" in my early musical career and education. Both my parents sang in the church choir, my mom is a former trumpet player and my dad has been singing Barbershop since way before I was born and continues to today. As a youth I was pummeled with Barbershop music  around the house,  unless it was  Herb Score  yelling about  a Cleveland Indians Game I only heard my dad's Barbershop music, until I got my own stereo! My "first live concert experience" was of course, a Barbershop Show. For the rest of my life my ears will always perk up at the sweet sounds of four part harmony. Thanks Mom & Dad for filling my childhood with music!

Ryan, What is your daily practice routine?

“Rome was not built in a day.”

-unknown

In order to build something great there must be a plan. Before there is a plan, there is motivation. In order for me to be productive I need both. I am always planning and building two interrelated things: the band and myself.

When I play with a band I want to be comfortable. It always seems that when I’m comfortable, everyone I’m playing with is too. So in order to relax and play my best on stage, I practice. It varies but mainly I learn songs, create different parts, and try to dial my tone in to the way the band sounds; anything to make the band sound and feel its best. However, there is a fine line between practicing songs too much and not enough. Too much can make a song sterile and lifeless,   while   not   enough   is   just   selfish  and   unprofessional.

A skyscraper is similar in that if it’s too strong, a strong gust of wind could blow it over. But if it’s not strong enough, it will not be able to support itself. Balance is the key.

My long-term goal as a musician is to be able to play every genre of music. I feel pretty good about rock, blues, country, funk, two-step, pop, etc. I want to learn more about jazz, hip-hop, island music, (reggae, calypso, merengue,) afro-cuban music, and afro-brazilian music. In order to do this I practice rudiments, independence, technique, time, and groove because these are the building blocks of drumming. I believe that a strong foundation makes a strong musician. What you do with that foundation is what really matters. I just want to be musical. Chops and solos are great but only in the right spots and there aren’t that many spots. In other words, just because I have lime green and hot pink paint doesn’t mean I would paint my house with it.

Rick, you designed the cover for “Drops In A Bucket – Vol 1.” and have another side to your artistic talents.  Tell us about that.

The "Drops In A Bucket" cover was a throw-away design in my opinion, but the guys liked it and it stuck.

I like messing with graphic arts as well as painting and sketching. I love customizing things in a creative way.

I also enjoy cooking, photography, writing poetry, sewing, interior decorating (seriously) and many other forms of art.

I naturally tend to put an artistic flair in most things that I do day to day. It keeps my life interesting and beautiful.

John, what’s the low-down on Sunshine Daydream and Tree Huggers Ball?

Sunshine Daydream is a magical piece of land in the rolling hills of West Virginia.  It is a great sounding natural ampitheater with a view that will take your breath away. Tree Hugger's Ball is the first show of the  year  at  SSDD  and  the  crowd  is  usually quite ready to dance away their Cabin Fever.  This will be Waterband's first time playing there and I am really looking forward to playing for the sunshine daydreamers.

VI.  Fan Kudo of the Month

Dave… totally awesome how well you guys can jam together.
many people feel they can play an instrument and call themselves musicians
but really to be a musician it take more than a guitar
it is gift to be able to play it
you have a passion as does Rick and John
you can see it in your faces
you love to play music
and do it very well
i was impressed.
my way of saying thanks to band
see ya
JOE
