Rick Phillips - Guitar

Ryan Bair - Drums

I.  Ask Waterband:

Rick:  Who were some of your guitar influences?

It sounds cliché’, but it all started with Jimi Hendrix when I was around 12 years old. My step-father was watching Woodstock on TV and I was captivated by the fringe-shirted Strat player.  I had to get all the Hendrix footage I could possibly find. That, of course, lead me to many other middle to late 60s blues & psychedelic bands and crazy guitarists.  I love Cream-era Clapton, Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi, Neil Young, James Gurly, Jorma Kaukonen, Duane Allman, Jerry Garcia, Keith Richards, George Harrison (John & Paul, too!), Dave Davies, Marc Bolan, Eddie Hazel, David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore, Mark Farner, Joe Perry, Joe Walsh, Billy Gibbons, Terry Kath, Jimmy Page, Mick Ronson, Carlos Santana,

Brian May & John Fogerty to name a few.  I also like the early rock & roll guitar greats like Scotty Moore, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Steve Cropper & Dick Dale.

Another sound that really turned me on was the raw power of the old blues & soul greats such as BB King, Lightning Hopkins, Hubert Sumlin, Pops Staples, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson & Leadbelly.  Some other guitarists that I loved as a kid and now include Slash, Richie Sambora, Tom Morello, SRV, Randy Rhoads, Gary Rossington & Brian Setzer.  There have been soooo many awesome and innovative guitar players throughout the years. My ears feel most at home with fuzzed-out, cranked tube amp 60s & 70s rock!

John:  How did you meet Dreadlock Dave?

Well, I saw Dave play a few months before I actually met him.  A few weeks after I saw this wild~haired~ wonder  play I had a dream about being on stage with him.  (I know it sounds strange)  So I asked around and found his number and called his house, when his answering machine picked up I left a crazy message stating that I had a dream about playing music with him!  He returned my call a few hours later and we got together for the first time I believe in '98.  We picked around for a while and knew right away that there was a great musical connection.  He just seemed to know my tunes before he heard them.  Seems like only yesterday... ....

David:  Are you always this shy?

Ryan:  You won the Louis Armstrong Award a few years ago.  How did that come about?

I was truly honored to receive the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award my senior year of high school. The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award is given to a high school student by his/her band director when the band director thinks that he/she deserves the award.  So, there are many recipients each year. Actually, I think there could be more than one recipient in each high school. In any event, I believe I received the award because of my dedication, to the Dover High School Jazz Band from 2003-2007. When I first joined the jazz band, I really knew nothing about jazz (I still know nothing), it really sparked my interest in the music. I started learning more about the style and what "jazz drummers" do and I tried to incorporate those ideas into my playing. I really enjoyed playing in that ensemble, it was a pretty powerful feeling. I guess the combination of all those things earned me the award, but I really don't consider myself to be great at jazz. I do get a healthy dose of it though, I am often in my basement playing along with the Buddy Rich Big Band, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, etc. Most of it is way over my head, but I'm just trying to capture the vibe, the style, and the feel.
